about

Serenading the Future is a reflection of what being human feels like to me. Every song on this album is an expression of an experience I had, a perspective I gained, a lesson I learned. It is about being alive. At the same time, it is about the future: every moment in the present is already in the past once you experience it, and the past - as beautiful and glorified as it might be - is merely a memory. That leaves us with the future, and this album is a tribute to the future that could be; a call to embrace ourselves, recognize the privilege we have to be alive, respect the world we live in and the people around us, and treat our paths with the same care and love we would treat a partner or a child.

My deepest gratitude and love goes to: Miguel, Miro, Alex, Roberto, Jeff, and Erin - I feel privileged to know you and to get to make music with you, thank you for putting yourselves in the music; Talley, Jonathan, Max, and Chelsea; my family for their love, for showing me by example what it means to be human and for teaching me to listen; thank you Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Larry Klein, Billy Childs, Hal Crook, Walter Smith III, Josh Nelson, Dubi Lenz, Daniel Seeff and the entire Monk Institute family; to all my friends, teachers, and students; GFEB thank you for being you, I love you.
